Solar Eclipse – August 21, 2017

Solar eclipse

We have some exciting events planned for the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017!

We have a limited quantity of eclipse glasses available for our patrons. Beginning at 9:30am on the day of the eclipse, we will distribute paper eclipse glasses to current, valid library cardholders (cards may not be expired, have overdue items, or have fines equal to or greater than $3). These glasses will be available on a first-come-first-served basis and will be limited to one pair per cardholder. The cardholder must be present and must show their library card at our circulation desk to receive a pair of eclipse glasses. Drivers licenses and other forms of ID will not be accepted in lieu of library cards.

In addition, on the morning of August 21 we will have stations set up in the children’s department for patrons to make pinhole viewers. (Can’t attend this event and want to make your own pinhole viewer? See the instructions here!)

Finally, beginning at 1:15pm, we will gather in Bentley Field, next to the library, for an eclipse viewing party! All are welcome to attend, regardless of whether you received a pair of eclipse glasses from the library or made a pinhole viewer in the morning. We will have eclipse-themed activities for patrons of all ages, and light refreshments will be served.

Please note that peak magnitude of the eclipse will not occur until approximately 2:45pm, so please be prepared to be outside for an extended period of time – Wear appropriate sun protection, and you may wish to bring a blanket or folding chair. Visit NASA’s eclipse safety guide for more information about how to view the eclipse safely!
